Dave and Caroline are leading the ride on 13/10. It will start from The Dorking Halls car park RH4 1SG and we will stop in Shere for coffee, then make our way to Okewood Hill for a pub lunch, stopping in Brockham for tea on the way back. Please contact us by the end of Friday so that we can give numbers to the pub. hobbs.caroline@yahoo.co.uk landline 01737 766649 or mobile 07788 915455 Thanks. Hope to see you on Sunday!

After receiving several emails which began “We’re sorry but...” we eventually found some takers. Richard and Anne met us at the car park by Dorking Halls. We soon joined the cycle route going west from Dorking. Since it had been very wet recently it was just as well that there was a good tarmac surface. However it gradually got poorer so we resorted to walking some parts.

After crossing the A25 at Abinger Hammer we joined another muddy and bumpy bridleway. Apparently Dave had found it fine earlier in the year when he’d ridden it. He eventually admitted that he’d been on his solo at the end of a dry June.

We stopped at the Dabbling Duck cafe in Shere. However on leaving we found that it had started to rain. After going through a road closed sign, we climbed Leith Hill gradually and descended quickly for an excellent lunch at the Punchbowl in Okewood Hill.

After making our way up Weare Street we passed through Capel and Newdigate, arriving in Brockham via Bushbury. We stopped here for tea and cake at the Church Hall. On leaving we admired the bonfire-building on the Green before crossing the golf course. A short stretch of A25 brought us back to the start. Overall we cycled about 33 miles and fortunately didn’t get as wet as the forecast had led us to expect! Thanks to Richard and Anne – who coped remarkably well with the off-road sections.
