Dave and Caroline led the joint Surrey and Sussex region and Kent region ride starting from Redhill.

The day was suprisingly pleasant, and after enjoying the usual chat, tea and coffee we left slightly behind schedule, heading East along the rather busy A25 through Godstone to begin the climb up the North Downs. Most of the group were delayed waiting for a group of horse riders to safely pass, whil Phil and Verna were delayed tightening everything up on their tandem, which was just rebuilt after their return from holiday. Liz and Mark were not delayed, so spent some time at the top waiting and chatting to another group of solo cyclists who had passed the rest of us on the way up.

We then headed along, past Botley Hill, whizzed back down to join the Pilgrims Way. Just before Sundridge the road was partly flooded, and then there was a nice muddy and potholed section of bridleway to try and reduce the glare from Mark and Liz's new super white shoes. We failed.

Phil and Verna

Mark and Liz - shoes still fairly white unfortunately

'Drew managed this bridleway without problems..

Cliff clearly enjoyed the bumps

The climb up to meet Liz and Ken at Ide Hill didn't seem too bad. After a toilet stop we whizzed rapidly down to pass Bough Beech reservoir, the level of which had increased by around 2m since the last time we passed a few weeks before. Soon we arrived at the Castle Inn for a well earned lunch and drink.

The return was through the lanes to Edenbridge, Merle Common, Tilburstow Hill and Bletchingley to join cycle Route 21 for a short offroad section. We have to keep the reputation of the "Slurry" and Sussex Group! Knowing that a section of Route 21 was flooded sufficently to require regreasing of pedals if attempted, we diverted through Merstham to rejoin Route 21 for another short offroad section before the final climb back to the start.

Everyone had a good attempt to clear out all of the cake Caroline had made, but fortunately failed so there was some left for me the next day!

Thanks to everyone for turning up, hope you enjoyed it - we did.
