*****report by Verna and Phil Forty miles of mud and smiles! Only 3 tandems for the first ride of the year…we usually have more…Where are you all? The weather was mild and mostly dry and our three determined crews made good timing up the hill to Steyning and on through Ashington and Storrington. Everyone was delighted to be able to ride through the Parham estate with lovely views to and above the stately home and a small herd of deer grazing near the road. Our objective for lunch, the Bridge Inn at Houghton Bridge, set us a challenge to arrive for their first lunch sitting. We weren’t far off! It was worth it. They did not disappoint with a Greek special on the menu and tasty macaroni cheese to mention only two choices sampled. The afternoon ride was shorter but no less demanding with the addition of a wet chalky surface on one section. Ann did very well as Martin’s “stand in” pilot and we certainly tested her off- road skills to the full. All that remained to do was to drink tea , light the birthday candles and help eat up the cakes at the leaders’ house before heading home to the big clean up.
