ride by Rachel & Russell

*****Report by Rachel and Russell Having anxiously watched the weather forecast all week, it was with some relief that we set off from Farnborough in dry, almost sunny, autumn weather. The route to coffee took in a mix of busy roads and quiet lanes, through Crookham and Dogmersfield, to the very cycle friendly “Next Door” in Odiham. Fed and watered, we trundled through Greywell and along to Upton Grey, passing Kong Fawkes and Pirate Guy (but sadly not Sir Bruce Fawkesythe!) who were decorating the village for its Autumn Festival. Lunch was at Lasham Gliding Club, watching gliders being launched by plane and winch, and a group of men in anoraks with big lenses excitedly writing numbers in notebooks. Then rolling hills to Lower Froyle loosened the legs before the stiff climb up to Well. A bit of a sharp climb but worth it for the views across the hills en route to Farnham. After dodging the Sunday shoppers in town we picked up quieter paths to Tongham, bumped along the canal towpath to Ash and back to Farnborough for much-needed tea and cake. The weathermen got it right – rain swept in at 5 o’clock when we were safely home and dry. Stats: 5½ tandems, 44 miles, 2,200ft climbing, 3 cakes. http://www.uptongreyautumnfestival.co.uk/guy-fawkes-2014-display-list/
