Ride by Tish and Andy

*****Report by Tish and Andy Surrey and Sussex April ride. Lead by Andy and Tish Johnson, most of the time! 14 riders with 2 joining from coffee to tea. Yes, that’s right they missed out the hilly start and the hilly finish.

We started out from Dorking on a bright fresh morning. Straight into our first climb up onto Ranmore Common and a breezy flat section across Effingham Junction and onto the disused airfield at Ockham and Wisley Common. Abandoned after WWII and never quite returned to farmland, this vast area of concrete was the test site for Vickers aircraft as the nearby Brooklands was not large enough. Recently used as the location for scenes in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse (2010). Crossing the busy A3 we stopped for a few minutes at Wisley RHS before heading over the canal at Pyrford Marina. We followed the course of the Wey Navigation and negotiated the road closed for bridge replacement. It wouldn’t be a club ride without a section of closed road!

Lunch at East Clandon in the Queens Head was followed by a quick descent into the picturesque Shere and the inevitable long climb out the other side. A fast down and a pot hole left us with Brian and Helen repairing a puncture while the rest headed for tea and cake in Cranleigh. Refuelled and ready for the climb up to Coldharbour, we enjoyed the beautiful bluebells in Frank’s Wood. We’d certainly seen some lovely spring flowers on our journey and the sky was now a glorious clear blue. We basked in the sunshine before an exhilarating 46mph downhill into Dorking. Back at the car park just before 6pm with 45 miles and 3300 ft of ascent under our belts, we knew we’d sleep well Sunday night.
