ride by Chris and Helen

*****Report by Helen For our winter tandem ride this year, we planned a re-play of the snow-affected ride last winter, and happily we had clear blue sky and sunshine this time. The group of six tandems and a small solo (being bike-tested by our petite friend Marion Guy) climbed from Wormley to Hindhead on the new cycle route resulting from building the A3 tunnel. For those who hadn’t seen it before, it was hard to believe that the little lane through the woods was once a trunk road. Conditions were so lovely that we kept stopping to admire the view and identify changes in the infrastructure. Consequently we were later than expected reaching Grayshott, arriving to find the café at the pottery in ‘freeze-frame’ observing the two-minutes silence. We continued through tiny leaf-strewn lanes, slippery in parts, to Bramshott and Liphook and then dropping from Hollycombe to Fernhurst for lunch. After two punctures, Tim’s back tyre went bang just before the Red Lion and was declared un-repairable. Happily, our daughter Amy was at home and obligingly drove out with a new tyre. Further slippage in the schedule meant we were too late for shopping at Lurgashall winery, but no one seemed to mind as we wended our way through the autumn colours lit by the setting sun. We reached home at dusk, with good appetites for tea and cake at the end of a very satisfying ride.
