We decided that we couldn't let the Olympic Games happen in our locality without a club camping weekend to celebrate.

A large group of us assembled at the Horsley Camping and Caravanning Club Site for the weekend of the Olympic road races. 0700 was the agreed hour for setting off on Saturday morning and just about everyone was ready, with a few stragglers joining up a little later. We secured a good spot beside the barrier on the A24 just south of the Givons Grove roundabout and we were pleased to find that there were temporary facilities in place for refreshment etc. There was a long wait for the race but what with newspapers to read, bacon to be cooked, chatting to be done and plenty to look at, the time passed quite quickly before the race came whi ing past us 8 times. After the riders had headed off up in to central London we had thought we might make our way in to Leatherhead where big screens were situated. Unfortunately as several thousand others also had this idea the road was just too crowded so we headed back towards the camp site. After a couple of punctures delayed us a little most of us made it to the pub in Bookham in time to watch the conclusion of the race on the television.

Later on that evening we all made our way to the Barley Mow pub in West Horsley for a meal.

On Sunday, the turn of the women to race, some of the group had tickets for the Box Hill viewing area, so they headed off a little earlier than the rest of us who had a relaxed morning, not leaving until after 10am. This time we headed for Denbies vineyard just north of Dorking, where there was a big screen. We got there in good time and saw some of the race on the screen before heading for the road to watch the peloton pass by, just once this time. Then back to the screen to see the race finish, a better result this time with Li ie Armistead taking the silver medal for Team GB.

All in all an excellent weekend with a fantastic atmosphere.
