*****Ride and report by Liz and Ken

Four tandems and one solo set off from our house in Eastbourne for the last ride of 2011. We all prepared for rain which was starting to fall as we left, but luckily it didn’t amount to much and we stayed more or less dry all day. The route took us initially out on to Pevensey Levels as far as Rickney then to Hailsham where we joined the Cuckoo Trail for the very gentle climb up to the high point of the day at Horam. Caroline managed to pick up a puncture in the rear wheel of her solo just before lunch but fortunately a quick pump up sufficed to get us to the pub, the Six Bells at Chiddingly. Here we met up with Keith and Jane who were already sat in the warm, most of us joined them quickly apart from David who seemed to have drawn the short straw – mending the puncture for Caroline.

After a good lunch we headed off through Muddles Green and Chalvington to a comfort break at Arlington Reservoir where the water level was exceptionally low for the time of year. The puncture returned to haunt us shortly after this and this time the tyre was changed and apparently was going to be disposed of – a rare occurrence for Dave – it must have been very old! The muddiest section of the ride followed through Nate Wood on cycle route 2 and then, as usual on the December ride, the hardest part was to get back up to our house at the edge of the Downs.

We finished up with tea and cakes and mince pies, and some hasty planning for the January ride. Ride distance about 36 miles.
