Ride by Keith and Jane

*****Ride and report by Keith and Jane

19 people gathered in Lewes on a bright, sunny and warm November morning for this Surrey and Sussex group ride. We were joined by Dave and Beverley who had made a special journey down from Essex.

The ride climbed out of Lewes in a northerly direction before turning west and following the foot of the South Downs past Plumpton Agricultural College and turning north again through Streat and onto the outskirts of Wivelsfield. The first of 2 punctures for the day came just before we reached Wivelsfield and some running repairs were required to a damaged rim before we were able to get under way again. On through South Chailey and then past Newick Park Hotel before turning down the narrow lane to the lunch stop at the Anchor Inn near Barcombe.

Lunch orders had been taken previously and our food was served as we made our way to the table. The food was excellent as was the service from the staff. A visit into our dining room by the chef was accompanied with an offer for us to “come back in the summer and I will do you a BBQ”. We will definitely be taking up this offer next summer.

At lunch we were joined by a ‘man in his fifties’ and Anne. Tim and Anne couldn’t join us for the ride as Tim had unfortunately been knocked off his solo bike earlier in the week and suffered some head injuries as well as gravel rash in all the normal places. I am sure he will be back on the bike soon. After lunch we headed through Barcombe and then onto Ringmer and Glynde.

Afternoon tea was taken at the Caburn Tea Rooms on their last day of opening before closing for the winter. On leaving the tea rooms the leaders discovered a front wheel puncture but decided to ‘pump and run for home’. The ‘run for home’ route followed the cycle path beside the A27 and then the river back to the start point.
