Ride by Keith and Jane

*****Report by Keith and Jane

9 people on 5 bikes gathered at the leaders house on a very bright sunny and warm day. Tea and coffee was on offer for those that arrived early enough. The route started out across Eastbourne Park, with beautiful views of the South Downs, before picking up the Cuckoo Trail from Polegate to Hellingly. Coffee was taken at the Cuckoos Rest, rather a strange place that is a sort of cafe, sort of pub, sort of sports centre, in fact a bit of all sorts. But however the coffee was hot and service friendly. Hellingly is usually a very sleepy place but today there was a 10km run taking place, but we only saw the back markers.

The ride then went north on country lanes to Horam where it turned south and then north again over undulating ground to the The Star Inn at Waldron for lunch. After lunch the route headed back to Horam, again undulating for a few miles, before joining the Cuckoo Trail again for a gentle down hill all the way back to Hellingly, hardly a rotation of the pedals required for 6 miles. It was really great to see so many families with young children out on bikes enjoying the great outdoors. Leaving the Cuckoo Trail at Hellingly the route went east before turning south across the Pevensey Marshes, where the one and only puncture of the day occurred. Through Hankham and then onto the Windmill at Stone Cross, for Christopher to visit a GeoCache, and back to the leaders house. Tea, coffee and large amounts of cake were consumed in the garden whilst all of us enjoyed the last of the days warm sunny weather.
