Ride by Ken and Liz

***** Ride and report by Liz & Ken

It was a clear, crisp morning for our final ride of 2010 from Eastbourne. 5 tandems set off and we made our way to the south western end of the seafront at Holywell. From here we took the easy option and turned left past the pier and on to meet up with Keith and Jane at the Sovereign Centre, here Tim was set a challenge to work out or guess the distance to the Royal Sovereign Lighthouse which was easy to see in the good conditions, disappointingly he was 150% out! We continued along the coast on the private road to Norman’s Bay. As we dismounted to negotiate the gates at the level crossing we were treated to the beautiful sight of a large flock of waxwings feeding on the berries. At Cooden Beach we turned inland just as an impressive hand-cranked recumbent trike passed up the road. The birding theme to the ride continued as a few teams spotted a woodcock in a field – very unusual in the daytime. It wasn’t far to lunch so we did an extra little loop around Hooe so as not to arrive at the pub before 12:00.

The Red Lion staff looked after us well and from the clean plates I think everyone enjoyed their meals. Whilst we were inside having lunch the skies had clouded over but the weather stayed dry for us as we headed back through Wartling (horrible short sharp uphill just after lunch!) and Rickney and back into Eastbourne on Sustrans’ routes 2 and 21.

As usual we finished the last ride of the year with tea and mince pies, a look back at the years’ rides and a look forward to the rides to come in 2011.
