Ride by Keith and Jane

7 tandems set out from the leaders house, close to Stone Cross Windmill, on a sunny and warm morning, cycling through the quiet lanes to Hankham and Rickney onto the Cucko Trail and into Hailsham, crossing the A22 and past the home of Eastbourne Eagles Speedway Team. Through Dicker and then the back lanes to Horam and Vines Cross, viewing the last of the bluebells and beginning of several new blooms. An undulating route took us to our lunch stop at the pub in Rushlake Green where great views of the surrounding country side were to be had as this was the high point with regard to climbing for the day.

The Horse & Groom pub served us great food with excellent service and it is recommended if you are ever in the area. The afternoon return route took in Bodle Street Green and then Windmill Hill. The leaders missed the turning to Windmill Hill due to the pilot being distracted by an unidentified wild animal on the road ahead, well that's his story!. Shortly afterwards the group split with the 'trackies' wanting a bit of the bumpy, lumpy stuff! And yes they got it!! result = 2 broken rims on 1 bike! They were warned. The whole group reformed and rode on, broken rims and all, across the Pevensey Marshes back to Rickney. Here the broken rimmed tandem limped back to its motor home whilst the remainder cycled onto Pevensey, through the Castle grounds and back to the leaders' house for tea and homemade cakes. The broken rimmed tandem rejoined us at the leaders house with two new wheels.

An excellent day with lovely company in beautiful weather and pretty countryside. Ride distance approx. 37 miles.
