Up and along the Downs to lunch at Great Bookham. Some bridleways - depending on how wet the ground is!

Approx. 35 miles

*****Report by Dave:

Six Tandems and a solo left Redhill on a cold and frosty but bright morning. The first section following N21 across the Merstham Marshes was particularly pleasant, with the birds gathering at the small areas of the lakes that were not frozen over.

The gentle start was soon forgotten however with a stiff climb up the North Downs towards Chaldon. No-one was complaining of feeling cold at the top, even though the roads were icy in places.

After the drop down to the A23 it was up again. A short downhill section was sheet ice - as the leader discovered with a few bruises to his side and pride. Soon after Liz and Ken had to stop and fix a puncture, while the rest of us waited at Lower Kingswood.

The next section of bridleway took us across Walton Heath golf course - not many golfers out today though.

A short road section took us to the next bridleway section to Headley. Despite being covered in frozen snow the grip was fine and it was good fun. By now though we were running behind schedule, so the route had to be shorted a bit by missing out the planned section of bridleway accross Leatherhead Downs. The road was all downhill to Leatherhead, with no ice, with just a little bit of a climb up to lunch at the Royal Oak in Great Bookham.

After a pleasant, relaxed lunch the by now tired out riders left heading south along yet another section of Bridleway - all uphill again, followed by a rather scary descent on a little used icy road to Westhumble.

By now light and legs were fading, so some more cuts to the original route had to be made, but not the pleasant bridleway past Dungates Farm, with a windmill at each end of it.

The ride ended after 32.6 miles and 2372 ft of climbing at the organisers house for tea and cakes, as well as a robot demonstration!
