***** Ride and report by Liz & Ken

For a change this year we decided to go to an Italian restaurant for our Christmas meal rather than a local pub. A total of 18 of us had a good evening, the food was very good and the atmosphere was bu ing, but not too noisy.

Next morning dawned bright but cold and 16 of us set off for a shortish ride from Eastbourne. As Keith was on call, he and Jane couldn’t join us for the ride but came to lunch and joined us after the ride too. We took a route mostly on cycle routes to join the Cuckoo Trail and headed north to Hailsham. Here we took a short detour to Tesco for a comfort break, which turned into a longer puncture mending stop just as the rain started. We surprised the Sunday morning shoppers by almost filling a very handy sheltered trolley park. Off again we crossed the A22 and continued past Arlington Stadium and Michelham Priory. When puncture number two struck we split into two groups with the menders and helpers taking the shorter main road route and the rest looping on a quieter lane to the lunch stop at the Lamb Inn, Ripe. The friendly staff looked after us well and we had a good meal, some even managed to dry some wet things on the radiators. The rain more or less stopped as we left the pub and after some nice quiet lanes we took cycle route 2 through Nate Wood, we put this section in just to make sure that the tandems got a good coating of mud! After a basically flat ride the hardest part, as always, was to get back up to our house at the edge of the Downs.

In accordance with tradition our December ride finished with tea and mince pies and a brief look back at another successful year of rides. David and Caroline were presented with the most rides trophy after only missing one ride during the year.
