Ride by Keith and Jane

Seventeen people on 8 tandems and 1 solo bike gathered at Pevensey Fire Station on a beautiful sunny morning. The morning route went along the coast, hugging the sea, to Galley Hill where we all enjoyed a short stop to look at the beach which was exposed at low tide. Then a short section of main road into St. Leonards followed by a short, but very steep climb up Harley Shute Road. The climbing continued up through Crowhurst before a very long decent into Battle for lunch at The Abbey Hotel.

This pub is situated right in the heart of the town but sat in the rear garden gave no indication of the traffic passing by outside nor of the Morris dancers that were performing in front of Battle Abbey. We were also surprised to find all of our bikes in amongst about 50 Harley Davidson Motorbikes, when we returned to them, quite a sight!

The afternoon route started downhill but the climbs soon re-appeared, up through Catsfield and into Bodle Street Green then down and up to Windmill Hill. Then a lovely run across the Pevensey Marshes stopping for a private tour and afternoon tea at Stone Cross Windmill. The ride happened to coincide with Mills Weekend and we were fortunate to savour scones and cakes made with flour that had been milled on site. The eager volunteers could not do enough for us and we thank them very much for their hospitality.

The day was full of surprises, a "mad man" on a horse and trap who deliberately steered the vehicle onto our side of the road whilst cracking his whip in our direction, then another man shouted abuse at us in St Leonards and finally we suffered a case of road rage when a motorist forced his way past us, with oncoming traffic, resulting in him brushing some of the riders, again in St Leonards. We did not let these inconsiderate people spoil our day. What more could you possibly want, nice weather, nice company and out on your bike when most other people were sat in their cars in traffic jams!!!

Ride distance 37.6 miles with 2392ft of climbing.
