Ride by Brian and Helen

Excellent, fast ride from Guildford to Odiham and back, using the Christmas Pie trail on the way out.

It might have been a treasure hunt: Leave Guildford via the route to some festive fare. So 9 tandems and a solo sped off along the mainly untarred tracks that form the Christmas Pie Trail.

This lead to coffee behind the one who always misses (Badshot Lea) before pausing to view the French Lieutenant’s Tree. No cryptic clue this time but an ancient oak that marks the furthest point from Odiham officer prisoners of the Napoleonic wars were permitted on their bicycle rides – sorry, evening strolls.

Then under the road, over the canal and into Odiham for lunch. In the square bounded on three sides by 18th century edifices and on the fourth by the church, we sat outdoors in the October sunshine. Just as well as the pub staff had failed to honour our indoor table reservation. Then two of the meals had to be sent back, nearly leading to the dreaded bonk later. Our post-prandial stroll included the Pest House situated within the church grounds; convenient for subsequent burial or to give thanks for a miraculous recovery.

One misunderstanding on the journey back through Hampshire and Surrey farmland: As he powered past the leaders downhill, Dave thought he heard “Left at the top of the 1 in 5.” The operative word was, in fact, “before”. A couple more off-road sections found us back in Guildford. While the remainder regrouped on the town bridge over the Wey, the leaders sped off up the cobbled High Street to put the kettle on, only to be last back with a puncture 400 metres from home. Keith’s birthday was then celebrated with tea & cakes and a slide show before dispersal into the autumnal dusk.
