Eastbourne Ride by Liz and Ken Plan B had to be hastily cobbled together for our December ride. 7 riders (and some who had thought better of it for various reasons) assembled at our house the morning after our Christmas dinner in Eastbourne which had been enjoyed by 12 people at the Tally Ho pub. The forecast was for wet and windy weather and, for a change, the meteorologists appeared to have got it right. Plan A had been to set off along the seafront and then up the zig-zags to Beachy Head, but due to the exposed roads we decided that staying north of the downs would shelter us from the worst of the winds. We set off just as the heavens opened and it was quite difficult to see where we were going for the first half mile or so. We met up with Keith and Jane in Polegate and headed off on Route 2 through Nate Wood and onwards into the weather to join up with the old drove road near Alciston. This is a nice byway at the foot of the downs with a reasonable surface except for a short section of gooey chalk near Firle. We weren’t the only mad people – we saw a few cyclists some horse riders and a couple of trail bikers all out and about. A short loop through Ripe and Chalvington with the wind behind brought us to the pub at Berwick Station just as the clock turned midday. We had a good meal, with Christmas Crackers (that had been missing the night before) that had better than average gifts – but the jokes were as predictable as ever. The conservatory we were in was nicely decorated but not as warm as it could have been and even fiddling with the heater controls couldn’t coax any heat out, so unfortunately gloves etc didn’t even get warmed up for the return leg. The consensus was for a fairly direct route back so we went up through Arlington to join the Cuckoo Trail in Hailsham and then back through Hampden Park to our house. Fortunately our radiators were warmer than those in the pub and socks and gloves were warmed for those who had to ride home. Tea and mince pies were enjoyed whilst we sorted out some of the rides for next year and presented the most rides trophy. Won again by Dave, Caroline and Christopher (who had stayed at home with Granny). Ride distance 33 miles
