Ride by Chris and Helen

Three Counties, by Helen and Chris After the storms, hail and floods of the previous weekend it was pleasing to have a good forecast for our ride on 8 October. On a sunny morning 19 of us gathered at Witley Station and we were delighted to welcome Russell and Rachel to their first tandem Club ride. We left by something of an obstacle course out of the back of the car park, but it's worth negotiating the level footbridge and nettles to avoid a steep climb up the road to cross the railway at the top of the Greensand ridge (which is the watershed between London and the south coast) only to descend again immediately.

Our initial route wound and undulated through the wooded Surrey Hills. The holly trees had an impressive crop of berries, and acorns and chestnuts were also in abundance beside and on the roads. Whitmoor Vale looked distinctly autumnal as we climbed towards Grayshott. Unfortunately, the last steep rise was too much for the 3×7 geared Pino, and the hub failed just before the coffee stop, so Tim and Anne had to arrange a taxi ride back to the start.

The rest of us continued through Headley and Bramshott Vale to Liphook and then Milland for a warm welcome at the Rising Sun for lunch, where Tim and Anne were able to join us.

In the afternoon we returned via Fernhurst and Lickfold. A pause to repair a faulty chain gave some a chance to pop into Lurgashall Winery for some early Christmas shopping. As we made good time back to Wormley, most of the group took the opportunity to visit the sculpture trail and art exhibition at King Edward's School 'Vivartis' art festival, including some Philip Jackson works and ingenious pieces made from reused cycle parts by Darren Greenhow.

Tea, scones, jam and chat concluded an enjoyable day out: thanks to all who participated.
