Chichester by Liz and Ken

Report by Li zOur first ride of the new year saw a good turnout with 17 riders (on 8 tandems and 1 fixed wheel solo) leaving Chichester railway station on an overcast but fairly mild morning. We thought a few hills were needed to ride off any festive excesses so the route took us over three Downland lumps at Goodwood, Lodge Hill and finally Chilgrove to the lunch stop at The Barley Mow in Walderton. In true Surrey & Sussex style the afternoon saw us all negotiating a rather muddy and rough lane to reach an excellent bridleway through the grounds of Stansted House. Having regained the road the ride leaders committed the unforgiveable sin of only spotting their own flat tyre after chatting whilst waiting for another puncture to be mended. The route then took us to tea in a rather rainy Bosham followed by the seaweed strewn road around the head of the Bosham Channel. From here it wasn't far back, mostly on the cycle track, into Chichester. We didn't arrive until it was pretty much dark (fortunately everyone had brought lights with them) after a total of about 36 miles.
