Chichester to Steep and back again. Various miles as participants rode from station or campsite to join the fun. (44-48?)
On a very hot day three tandem couples were glad of a partially shady route up the Centurion Way to Lavant and then by lanes to the popular Village Shop and TeaRoom at Compton. The continuing sunny weather had encouraged several other cyclists and the refreshment stop was buzzing!
We climbed steadily up past Uppark House and enjoyed a few descents on our way to Petersfield. To make the most of the shade outside we had to split up into couples for a tasty lunch at the traditional old pub The Harrow at Steep. Sadly we were unable to treat ourselves to the attractive flowers and plants on sale here.
On the return journey we made use of the Shipwrights’ Way up to Butser Gap and then through Rowlands Castle and Westbourne. At Woodmancote we spotted an Orbit tandem parked outside the inn. We couldn’t just cycle past so spent a sociable half an hour with a drink chatting to some new friends from Solent and Isle of Wight TC.
Russell and Rachel returned to their camp to pack and go home while Hilary and Richard stayed with us into Chichester to begin their cycle quest with a question about the Cathedral.
A thoroughly enjoyable day out. Thanks for joining us. Phil & Verna
